Organization Earth implemented three local activities based on Urban gardening & social inclusion of disadvantaged young people in the framework of the project CYSD – “Community-based Youth work and Sustainable Development in EU and Africa”. 15 local participants took part in activities such as Collective cooking and sharing, Composting and Urban Gardening and they discussed about Sports and social inclusion.
The first and the second day of the local activities took place at the “Centre of the Earth”, an award-winning hub for environmental education operated by Organization Earth as a functioning organic, urban, social farm at the same time, offers nature-based educational programs for schools and pupils. It includes a seasonal organic vegetable garden and a biodiversity garden. On the third day, activities took place at Earth K44 which is an industrial space hosting the offices of Organization Earth in downtown Athens.
Day 1
Collective cooking and sharing, proposing a sustainable nutritional model, by practicing the “F2F” model. More specifically, on the 8th of November, participants had the opportunity to cook recipes with local & and seasonal ingredients from Organization Earth’s organic farm as well as from other local producers. The preparation of the meals brought the participants closer together and offered an opportunity to exchange their experience and knowledge regarding sustainable food & and cooking practices, based on cultural heritage of different origins. In addition, they prepared and cook a pot of fresh and nutritious food to be offered to people who are affected by food insecurity.
Day 2
Composting, Urban gardening, a workshop that offered practical and theoretical organic farming techniques to the participants. The activities addressed environmental and climate change issues and aimed to promote ways to apply the Farm to Fork strategy in the agro-food sector. Participants improved their understanding regarding the importance of green space in urban settings, organic agriculture, and nutritional and health-related options based on fresh, high-quality, local crops.
Day 3
Sports and Social inclusion through presentations and learning activities. The topics were related to Sport for Development programs and Gender and Sexual Orientation. During the first part of the activity, the participants had the opportunity to learn about sports for Development programs and activities that can directly contribute to the plethora of SDGs from Hope Sports, which is the Sport for Development & Social Empowerment initiative of Organization Earth. During the second part of the activity, we invited a women’s non-profit organization specializing in gender issues and equality, Diotima. The participants through the presentation and the interactive activities were informed about how we can highlight and eliminate gender-based discrimination and about the empowerment of women.
