Community-led Sustainable Local Development – Rocca di Cerere Geopark

Italy

On 30 November, 1 and 2 December, an event entitled ‘Community-led sustainable local development’ was held at the Hotel Riviera, in Enna. The initiative is part of the CYSD (Community-based Youth and Sustainable Development in EU and Africa) project, co-financed by the European Union, with a particular focus on the Rocca di Cerere Geopark LAG and the development of local businesses and sustainable tourism, starting from the specific needs of the area.

The focus of the event was the territory of the Rocca di Cerere Geopark area, and attention was focused on the processes of change activated in this community. During the working days, in-depth meetings and discussions were held to analyse the territory’s needs and to develop innovative and integrated strategies to foster change.

During the first day, several local development initiatives were presented, with a special focus on the experiences of the beneficiaries of the Rocca di Cerere Geopark LAG. Local companies shared their success stories in pursuing sustainable development objectives, highlighting how the active participation of the community has played a fundamental role in their journeys.

One of the noteworthy initiatives was the presentation of the KORE SICILIAE cooperation project. This cooperation between small operators aims to organise common working processes for the development of geotourism.

On 1 December, the event hosted a training meeting on ‘Territorial Cooperation for Local Development’. Important contributions were provided by Professor Gianluca Burgio, Professor Giulio Pedrini and Dr. Alessia Amorfini, expert of the European Geopark Network.

In the afternoon of the same day, a round table explored the theme of geotourism and the development of rural areas. Greetings from the president of the GAL Rocca di Cerere Geopark, the Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C, and the Ordine degli Agronomi e Forestali introduced the interventions of experts such as Professor Gianluca Burgio, ITS Fondazione ARCHIMEDE Director Giovanni Dimauro, GAL Metropoli Est Director Salvo Tosi, CNA Director Stefano, and sustainable tourism expert Claudio De Monte Nuto.

The last day of the event saw the conference on territorial policies in the Rocca di Cerere Geopark.
The event was an important moment of reflection and experience sharing on the promotion of community-led sustainable local development, a moment to promote dialogue and concrete action for the sustainable development of the territory.

The commitment of all participants points to a positive outlook for the future, emphasising the importance of cooperation and active participation to achieve common sustainability and development goals.
