Training course in Palermo (Italy)

Project Cycle Management and community development

In Palermo, partners had the opportunity to learn about the key aspects of the design and life cycle of a project, to design new opportunities and services to foster the development of local communities in their respective countries in Europe and Africa. An in-depth analysis was made, followed by an exchange of opinions and experiences between the partners, on what is meant by “community development” and how to design new services for the local communities. In this regard, a general project design exercise was carried out, starting from the drafting of a concept note and including: the analysis of the needs of the target groups through the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, the definition of both generic and specific objectives to be achieved, the elaboration of a stakeholder engagement plan and so to develop a final project proposal.

Partners explored what a “community” is and how a community is built on values, identity, and common sense to be shared by all its members. In this regard, the partners discussed on how to empower the community through the promotion of collective actions, human rights, social inclusion, social justice. 4
Partners can be inspired by the community of Sciacca (Sicily, Italy) which strongly promotes community management projects of different services (commercial services, cultural services, educational services, craft services, etc.) also including citizens with disabilities.

Moreover, the partners had the opportunity to exchange with the promoters of high-quality community empowerment projects in Palermo, “Booq” and “Cotti in fragranza” which provide job opportunities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The importance of tourism in promoting new models of community development was stressed out too.

Finally, partners had the opportunity to network and start designing new projects together.
