Project: challenging the rural child’s knowledge

Objectives

  • To develop children become joyful and confident learners who are engaged and have vigour to pursue education.
  • To provide an educational programme that develops children/students curiosity and creativity to understand and be a better managers for community development.
  • To help children gain a broad or specialised understanding of a subject.
  • To encourage and the method of making learning fun, while also enhancing general knowledge.
  • To evaluate the knowledge of students within academics as well as improve them in general knowledge, especially participating students.
  • Provide quality basic literacy education to all children, especially, in deprived rural communities.

Focus

Access to Quality and Equitable Education for all Children in deprived rural areas.

Description

School for Life is a lead CSO offering relevant quality basic education to out-of-school children in deprived and hard-to-reach communities, particularly in Northern Ghana. School for Life work to influence national level policies and programmes by engaging with strategic states and non-states actors through advocacy. Aimed at improving access to relevant quality basic education for all by delivering, demonstrating and advocating for equitable quality basic education in underserved areas of Ghana.

  • Organize an inter-schools “Reading and Quiz Tournament at the basic schools (Primary and Junior High Schools), focusing on the deprived rural communities. This initiative will includes inter-schools reading and quiz clubs, and inter-schools sporting clubs.
  • This initiative aimed at developing children reading and learning skills, build their confidence, and makes learning joyful and fun with sports and recreational activities.
  • The project is to be based in Six (6) rural communities in Northern Region, Ghana, which records low literacy rate in Ghana.
  • This rural school (Primary and JHS) is going to form Reading and Quiz clubs and Sports teams at the school level.
  • The project be Two (2) month every year. Example, October-November every year.
  • There shall be Reading and Quiz competition in each schools level to select the best performing students for the inter-schools Reading, Quiz and Sports tournament.
  • The first round of the tournament is going to be Six Primary schools and Six JHS from each selected communities.
  • In the first round of the tournament, the two low performed schools will be disqualify while four Primary and JHS will go for the second round of the tournament, which will be the final round where four Primary and Junior High Schools will be competing for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions.
  • The best performed school for the Reading and Quiz tournament shall receive a new band computer, some reading and learning materials, new school uniform for participants and an amount of money.
  • The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th performed school shall receive their awards.
  • The second phase of the project shall consist of the Sports (Football) tournament for both Primary and Junior High Schools.
  • The schools that takes the 6th position, 5th position, and 4th position shall not receive an award.
  • The school that wins the tournament will be awarded, together with the 2nd and 3rd position school.

At the end of the exercise all participants will be standing in different points of the room, constructing a kind of “human scale” from the most privileged to the less privileged (based in their subjective decisions)..

5 years (a period of two months; Once every year)

Materials

Teaching and Learning Materials, Footballs and other Sporting Materials.

Tips and Tricks

Teaching, Reading and Quizzes, Sports, Football and Recreational activities.

Debriefing Reflection

At this point every participant will have to describe/explain their feeling of being part of this activity.
Explaining what situations were more difficult for them in the tournament.

Facilitate a discussion with the following leading questions:

  • How did you feel about the programme and activities?
  • What will you suggest the organisers should add next time?
  • What new things did you learn from the programme?
  • Did you thing this programme can help motivate student in their educational career?

Conclusion: 15 min
Thank your participants for the participation and leave them with a short reflection on how the programme went and their experiences.
